EVE Online : New Details on Planetary Interaction

Posted Mar 10, 2010 by Michael Bitton

CCP Hammer has posted a new dev blog on the official EVE Online website detailing the Planetary Interaction features which will debut with the launch of EVE Online's newest expansion, Tyrannis, later this summer.

CCP Hammer kicks things off with a bit of backstory, explaining that CCP has wanted to do Planetary Interaction for some time, and teasing us with the progression of EVE from interacting with planets as players will come Tyrannis, down to the boots-on-the-ground experience of DUST 514, and inside stations with the release of Incarna.  The goal is for EVE Online to be the "ultimate sci-fi simulator." But as Hammer admits, he is getting a bit ahead of himself.

So what is Planetary Interaction, exactly? Hammer explains below:

A little about what Planetary Interaction is; PI is a feature in which industrial minded pilots can now take advantage of the resources on planets which had previously been laying dormant. To do that one simply opens the planet browser, finds a suitable planet via a scanning interface then plunks down various things we have internally been calling PINs (planetary interaction node), links those PINs together and then configures routes for all of the stuff moving between the PINs. PIN is just a working title and we've got our highly trained sci-fi experts on the task of renaming everything so you should expect the name to change by the time they reach Tranquility. Our ultimate goal being to create a nice additional revenue stream for people that's wrapped up in a sexy UI with lots of sci-fi feeling content that eventually ties in seamlessly with DUST 514.

Find out tons more about Planetary Interaction here.

A number of the Planetary Interaction features are now available on Singularity, with some screenshots available here.

 Awesome concept art :P

And from how it was described in the dev blog, this is way more than what I expected. Cool.

also remember this expansion will removed some NPC goods and player will make them on planets

TTH: There's been some talk on the forums about planetary interaction replacing NPC-seeded products on the market. The materials like skillbooks and so forth that players aren't producing, but that show up on the market anyway. Can you quash those rumors?

Torfi: No, I can't. Because that's what we really want to do. But we are probably not going to change all that overnight. One of our goals with planetary interaction is to phase out these NPC created commodities, because we want to put the power into the hands of the players and make EVE even more sandbox-y than it is.

There are elements of EVE which we feel can use some iteration based on the experiences that we have learned, running EVE for seven years. The NPC market is definitely one of them. It's been with us for a long time. It hasn't changed much. We want to take these commodities and move them into the hands of the players.

We are not giving out publicly yet which commodities these are. Even once we put it on the public test server, you will not be able to see what these final commodities are going to be.

PI is only us looking at a zoomed up picture of a planet and placing Icons on it. Think Rts or one of those Web based strat games.  It's a indy thing right now.

Dust will have both the Fps on ground combat and vehicle combat.

Freakin' hilarious picture. I like CCP; they're serious, but they also know when to relax with their customers.

That will happen someday....but this is a good start.

The only thing I did not like was the competition for the space elevator and not being able to build one.  Looks to me that everyone will initially tie the space elevator up on each planet and then all the 2nd comers will be at their mercy.  Without Dust being active you have no method of challenging them.

CCP would need to create an entire new mmo for that to happen. To incorporate an entire on ground game is too much to ask of these guys.

We need to be realistic, Eve is a spaceship mmo, were not supposed to land on planets and suddenly be playing SWG (even though thats my dream mmo).

The best we can hope for is a resource management Style web game incorporated into Eve.

That's what PI looks like at the moment.

The combat can be handled like other strat web games of this type. By dice rolls. Set your attack and then wait out the outcome.

One thing I dont like about the feature is that i need to float above a planet. I should be able to dock in my command center, If I cant PI in Low sec will be virtually worthless since you will easily be scanned down and ganked while trying to micro manage your little Pins.

Steps which will soon be followed all the way to the ground by a link into DUST 514 and inside stations with Incarna. Our final destination being an all encompassing sci-fi simulator where you can experience any sci-fi experience you desire."

That amazes me from an indie company!! i think their overall view and goals are amazing! Lets see if they can achieve it.

They would need twenty years to achieve that goal and to keep Eve even viable they would need atleast two graphical overhauls by then.

I hope they achieve this vision but if they don't and Eve stays just a straight up Spaceship mmo I will be happy that i had the pleasure of experiencing such a fantastic game.

It looks to me like Planetary Interactions will all be spreadsheet based, you open up a planet in a browser window and plop down stuff.

I was hoping PI would be more graphical in nature. For example, being able to view the surface of planets, being able to view the facilities you place there. Right now in EVE you can't even orbit planets. Your ship stays about 4 to 5 thousand kilometres away from them and you can't really get any closer.

I was hoping they'd turn planets from the ethereal things they are now into solid, real parts of the EVE universe. I'd like to be able to park my ship in orbit of a planet, I'd eventually like to tour the surface of planets and the facilities I build there when Incarna comes out, I'd eventually like to enter the atmosphere of planets with my ship, maybe even land there with some ships.

Here's hoping this is the future direction EVE will take.

Bit of battle cruiser millenium would be nice where you can leave the cruiser in space and go down to the planet and fight as a marine, but that is not an mmo though.
